THERE was a surprise waiting for winners of a Thurrock Council road safety competition when they arrived at their schools on Thursday 16 July.

The council had provided a bag full of road safety goodies which was presented to the winners by their head teachers.

One winner from each of the schools taking part in the pedestrian training scheme, organised by the council’s road safety team, has been chosen.

Pedestrian training is undertaken in every primary school in Thurrock to prepare the young people for Thurrock’s busy roads in an attempt to reduce the number of child casualties.

To assess how much a child has learned and to monitor the project, evaluation forms are given to every pupil in Year 6 participating in the training and a prize draw, is held with the winners chosen from 16 schools taking part and who returned their forms.

Cllr Oliver Gerrish, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for transportation said: “It is essential children are given the appropriate skills and information so they can use our roads safely – lessons that will be with them throughout their lives.”
