Thurrock Labour welcome election of Jeremy Corbyn

    THURROCK Labour politicians have reacted to the news that Jeremy Corbyn is the new leader of the Labour Party.

    The Islington North MP won 59% of the vote however only 13 Labour MPs voted for him.

    The leader of Thurrock Council, cllr John Kent said: "This was a stunning victory and has certainly energised the party.

    "It has created debate and interest, the like of which I have not seen for a very long time.

    "I think he can lead the party to victory in 2020 and the fight starts now!"

    Shadow Leader of the House of Lords, Baroness Smith was also in positive mood.

    Baroness Smith said: "I was at the election declaration and this has certainly instilled energy into our party.

    "Half a million people got engaged in this election and this must be a good thing.

    "I think he can now concentrate on taking on the vicious cuts that the Tories have imposed and the deep deep cuts that are about to come."

    Former Thurrock MP, Andrew Mackinlay has also welcomed the news.

    Mr Mackinlay said: "I have known Jeremy Corbyn since we were both trade union officials in the seventies.

    "He now has the opportunity to bring back democracy to the Labour Party.

    "This is hugely significant for politics and could well see a sea change.

    "There are terrible terrible cuts coming down the line which are going to have a real impact on the people of Thurrock.
