ESSEX Police are appealing for information after a burglary in Stanford-le-Hope where a number of medals of sentimental value were stolen.
The break-in happened around August 30 where entry was forced via a conservatory in Woolifers Avenue.
Medals belonging to two late relatives of the victim who served their country during both World Wars were taken, a plaque awarded to Private 30360 William George Ray and acknowledgements from King George V were stolen.
Also taken was a small blue coin bag which contained nine half crowns and two shillings equating to around £1.22 in today’s money. These coins were removed from Private Ray’s uniform pocket following his death and returned to his family.
Three medals awarded to Private Robert Stamp for his service during WW2 were also taken.
Dc Steve Cunningham at Grays CID said: "The victims’ family has been the entrusted custodians of the items for nearly 100 years and are devastated by the loss and are desperate for the medals and paperwork to be returned.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dc Cunningham on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
