A severe weather warning for high winds has been issued for Essex on Tuesday, November 17) evening as Storm Barney approaches.

The Met Office has issued the warning, which applies from 3pm to 11.30pm tomorrow.

The yellow alert, means "be aware", and says gusts could reach 60-70mph inland and 80mph along exposed coasts.

Winds of that speed would likely bring disruption to travel, and could bring down trees and lead to some damage to weakened structures.

An accompanying assessment from the Met Office’s chief forecaster says: "A deepening area of low pressure is likely to track east across southern Ireland and then central parts of the UK during Tuesday afternoon and evening, with a swathe of very strong winds potentially developing on the southern flank of the low."

There is, however, a "good deal of uncertainty" in the location of the strongest winds, meaning the warning will be kept under review and revised if necessary.

Essex Weather Centre says Storm Barney will bring heavy rain in addi tion to high winds.

Showers are likely to continue on Wednesday and Thursday, before the currently mild conditions disappear on Friday, when there may be some wintry showers.

The weather centre’s medium-range outlook for next weekend says parts of the country could see snow.

It says: "Showers may fall as snow over higher parts of Scotland and northern England, but there is a risk that these could reach the hills further south though the weekend, with overnight frosts also possible."
