Care crisis in Thurrock as companies terminate contracts with council

THERE IS A SILENT crisis looming in Thurrock that is affecting many vulnerable residents personally and every council tax payer financially.

For many years a number of companies across the borough have delivered care packages.

These are often for what is called "Domiciliary Care".

The sis described as: "A carer visits you in your own home and helps you with any daily activities you cannot safely manage on your own (getting dressed; washing around the house; going to the toilet). How often they visit and for how long each visit lasts, depends upon how many ìone-to-oneî care minutes/hours you require".

However, YT understands that a number of companies have contacted Thurrock Council to officially inform them that they are terminating their contracts.

A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said: "One domiciliary provider contacted us last week and we are working with them currently to take the service back in-house.

"We were given six months’ notice by another which ends in February. We are working with them too.

"Other providers have also told the council the current rate we pay is too low – especially with the National Living wage uplift next April – we estimate the total extra cost for Thurrock Council taxpayers would be around £1½ million annually".

YT is endeavouring to speak to the relevant companies.

Has your family and/or a family member been effected by these changes?
