ESSEX Firefighters are warning people to be careful if a fire breaks out on their cooker.

The warning follows a kitchen fire in Lyndhurst Road, Stanford-le-Hope which saw a pan filled with boiling wax catch light and burn one woman and leave another suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.

Crews quickly dealt with the fire and give first aid to the two women involved.

Station Officer Geoff Wheal said: "They had been melting wax in a pan to make candles and left the cooker on when they went out and the pan caught light. The woman tried to move the pan into a sink holding it with a tea towel and ended up setting light to the curtains.

"Our advice is don’t try moving a pan which is alight and never put water on them. If you can cover them with a damp tea towel and get out immediately closing the kitchen door behind you and call us in to deal with it.

"Luckily in this case neither of the women were badly hurt but it is far better to be safe than sorry when it comes to kitchen fires."
