Nutcracker to broadcast live at Vue Thurrock

THE Nutcracker, a firm family favourite, will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world on Wednesday 16 December at 7.15pm with a repeat screening of the quintessential festive treat on Sunday 27 December at 2pm.

With Tchaikovsky’s mesmerizing score, a Christmas tree that magically grows, a battle between toy soldiers and an Army of Mice led by The Mouse King and the famous dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy danced by Royal Ballet Principal Lauren Cuthbertson, the screening presented by Darcey Bussell is not to be missed.

Peter Wright’s enchanting production tells the story of Clara, danced by Royal Ballet First Soloist Francesca Hayward, whose Christmas is transformed by a visit from Drosselmeyer, a mysterious magician and maker of magical toys, who longs to break a curse that has turned his nephew into a nutcracker doll.

Matched with exquisite designs and world-famous melodies, The Nutcracker has enthralled audiences for over 30 years since its opening in 1984. The production showcases the full energy of the Company, alongside the emerging talent of young dancers from The Royal Ballet School. The stunning costumes, numbering around 600 and dating back to the world-premiere, are revitalized for the show and captured in all their splendour by six cameras in the auditorium.

Peter Wright says: ‘I’m very happy that my Nutcracker is still so loved after more than 30 years. Most of the credit has to go to composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky for his superb music and to the late Julia Trevelyan Oman for her designs. But it is really The Royal Ballet dancers and staff who make the magic happen.’
