THURROCK Adult Community College celebrated Mother Language Day from 23-25 February 2016 at Grays Adult Education Centre. An audio visual exhibition was displayed in the Cyber Café, prepared by learners on our popular ESOL courses, who shared videos of their first language learned at home in childhood plus many other cultural poems, stories and anecdotes.
All learners and visitors to the Centre were offered the opportunity to celebrate their Mother Language and 40 diverse Mother Languages were recorded, ranging from Amharic to Zulu and Cockney to Yoruba.
Mother Language Day takes place on 21st February and is the United Nations’ (UN) official celebration day of languages spoken worldwide. It also observes the human right to use these languages.
