75th anniversary of day ten died in Stanford-le-Hope

    SATURDAY 9th April saw the 75th anniversary of worst disaster in East Thurrock when on Tuesday 8th April 1941 a land mine on a parachute (a paramine) exploded whilst caught on the overhead wires at the junction of Corringham Road and Burgess Avenue. Stanford-le-Hope.

    This caused the sad deaths of 10 people Including three persons from one family and two persons from two other families. Two persons were blinded and many others were injured.

    The dedication of a plaque and planter outside Oak House, which during the war was the Norwegian Seaman’s Mission which was devastated by the blast, and rebuilt in 1950 was led by John Read (RAF Bomber Command) and Dedicated by Rev Roy Jefferies.

    The turnout of local people was amazing, with people who were affected by the blast
