MP Stephen Metcalfe welcomes vote to leave European Union

STEPHEN Metcalfe, Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock has today welcomed the results of yesterday’s EU Referendum and said: “I am pleased the UK has voted to start the process of leaving the EU and look forward to us taking back control over our own destiny.”

“This is a momentous moment in our country’s history and one which I believe presents us with many opportunities. There will be many hurdles to overcome over the coming months, but as I have always said I am confident we can meet any challenges that come our way and that the UK has a bright future outside the EU. We will of course wish to continue to cooperate closely with other member state on areas of common interest.”

He continued: “We do not want to rush the process of exit, nor do we want to unduly delay it. What we must all do now is act in the best interests of the whole of the UK.”

With regard to the announcement from the Prime Minister that he will start the process of finding his replacement, Stephen said: “I am disappointed by the Prime Minister’s decision to resign, but obviously respect both him and his decision.”

“Personally I believe he could have led the negotiations around our exit, but it is clear he did not believe that himself.”

“I would like to place on record my support for the Prime Minster and to thank him for not only trusting the British people with this momentous decision, but for all his work over the last 6 years as Prime Minister in leading the UK’s recovery.”

“We now look forward and need to re-unite the country as we start to plan our future as a free, independent, confident nation building a brighter future outside the EU.”
