Football: Aveley lose first game under new manager

Ryman Div One NorthWaltham Abbey 1 v 0 TilburyReport courtesy of Aveley FCWALTHAM Abbey have always been a really tough team to play. And they proved that for most of this game as they managed to get their noses in front of us with a slightly fortunate goal, but held on to deny Terry Spillane at least a point in his first match in charge. The hosts started brightly with Darrell Russell down the right hand side zipping in a good ball across the six yard box, but thankfully for us no one could get on the end of it.Our first chance of the game came as Jack Edwards spread the ball wide to Daniel McCullock, Daniel took on his man and managed to get a corner out of it. Abs Seymour’s ball in skimmed the top of Perry Dunn’s head and went out for a throw-in for the hosts.Abbey then had back-to-back chances of their own. First Gregory Moorse had his right footed curling effort clear the bar, and the second came for Logan, but he dragged his effort wide of the right hand post. Two minutes after that, ex-AFC Hornchurch and Barkingside man Michael Spencer met Logan’s cross with a volley and saw his well timed effort crack the crossbar. The Millers should’ve then taken the lead after 20 minutes, a wonderful Abs Seymour through ball found Taylor Tombides who raced through on goal, but saw his near post effort go wide of the goal. Both Jack Edwards and Taylor Tombides both had half chances minutes later. Jack Edwards tackled well and found himself on the edge of the area but seemed to snatch at it and it went wide of the goal. Taylor Tombides then managed to cut inside and create an opening for himself but his fizzed effort was deflected away.We lived to regret those missed chances as Gregory Moorse opened the scoring for the hosts after 30 minutes. Moorse found himself with a lot of space down the right hand side, he whipped in a cross which managed to evade Lamar Johnson and fly into our top right corner. Waltham Abbey 1-0 Aveley FC.Billy Coyne managed to create an opportunity for the Millers, he crossed well into the box to Sherwin Stanley but he was quite far out from goal and his header was saved by Lewis Lockyer.Half Time | Waltham Abbey 1-0 Aveley (Moorse 30 – ).During the half time break the Millers made a change with the lively Emmanuel Ighorae coming on for Taylor Tombides. And Emmanuel Ighorae was straight into the action and put Sherwin Stanley in on goal, he used his strength to hold onto the ball but saw his close ranged effort somehow kept out by Lockyer.Abbey’s Logan had two chances in quick succession, which saw him just curl his efforts a whisker wide of the left hand post. The Millers were much better in the second half as we started to create more clear cut chances, Arian Retkoceri played the ball outside to Emmanuel Ighorae who beat his man, cut inside but his shot was unfortunately straight at Lockyer. The hosts did have a few more chances on the counter as we poured players forward, the ball first dropped to Waltham Abbey captain Ryan Blackman but his volley looped over Lamar Johnson’s bar. The next the front two combined again, Logan crossed for Russell but his shot was wide of the target.Unfortunately for the Millers we now have an increasing list of injuries; George Woodward, Nathaniel Gordon, Brian Okwera, Olumide Olliwatimilehin and now Emmanuel Ighorae. Going into the last ten minutes Emmanuel looked to have pulled up after being fouled, and he was forced to go off with young Jordan Peart on in his place.Waltham Abbey took off all three forward men and replaced them with two centre halves and a midfielder to try and hold onto their slender 1-0 lead, but the Millers did have chances.A lovely ball in from Harry Gibbs found Sherwin Stanley but his flicked header towards the back post was well held by Lockyer. With less than a minute to go Lockyer again saved his team as Frankie Sinclair fired a low shot towards the goal, despite it taking a nick off of the bodies in front of Lockyer, the Waltham Abbey shot-stopper managed to keep the effort out and hang onto his clean sheet.Full Time | Waltham Abbey 1-0 Aveley (Gregory Moorse 30 – ).Attendance | 61.Millers XI | Lamar Johnson, Billy Coyne, Frankie Sinclair, Jack Edwards, Harry Gibbs, Perry Dunn, Daniel McCullock, George Pullen (Arian Retkoceri 61), Sherwin Stanley, Abs Seymour, Taylor Tombides (Emmanuel Ighorae 45 (Jordan Peart 84).Unused Subs | Michael Finneran, Gaz Dauti.Waltham Abbey XI | Lewis Lockyer, Michael Spencer, Macauley Jones, Jack Daveney, Daniel Rimmell, Sam Robbins, Billy Holland, Ryan Blackman, Darelle Russell (Ben Glasgow 78), Romaric Logan (Danny Haigh 87), Gregory Moorse (Gavin Suddell 63).Unused Subs | Antony Page. The Millers return to action at home against Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday.
