Thurrock Cubs celebrate 100 Years

CUBS from across Thurrock had the wildest birthday ever during 2016 as they celebrated their centenary.

The Cub packs held various parties and camps throughout the year to celebrate the 100 years and took on the challenge of completing various 100 challenges.

There were also three big events during the year that saw every Cub joining together.

The first was the annual District Camp at Condovers in May. The campsite was decorated with the theme of the Jungle Book and there were loads of activities on offer, including some taken from old Cub manuals.

On the Sunday, volunteers who have been supportive of the Cub section in the past, along with the Mayor Sue Gray, were invited to a thanks party which included a very nice Cubs100 cake!

While the Friday night felt more like a winter camp, the rest of the weekend was glorious and the young people had a fantastic time.

In June Thurrock joined Cubs from Brentwood and Basildon at Thriftwood Campsite in Brentwood for a big celebration activity day. The day saw over 500 Cubs enjoy climbing and abseiling, water rollers, pedal cars and lots more. The event was also visited by Wayne Bulpitt, the UK Chief Commissioner of Scouting.

The year of celebration was completed with a big party at the Backstage Centre in Purfleet on the 16th December, the actual birthday of Cubs Scouts.

At 7:16pm, the young people joined Cubs from across the country to renew their promise, before enjoying some party games.

The evening finished with a very mad game where each Cub had a balloon attached to their ankle and had to pop each others.

2017 looks set to be another fun year so if you would like to get involved, visit www.thurrockscouts.org.uk or phone 07706 829760. Young or old, Scouting is for all and everyone will make a difference to the young people.
