Football: Aveley defeated by promotion-chasing Jammers

Ryman Div One North

Maldon and Tiptree 3 v 1 Aveley

Report by Jamie Manktelow

Millers come undone at Maldon

A spirited second half performance should have gained the Millers a point; instead they suffered a 3-1 loss to promotion chasing Jammers.

The Millers were dealt a big blow before the game had even started as George Woodward was injured during warm up which meant a reshuffle saw Michael Toner drop to left back.

Aveley having had to reshuffle the pack before the game had started then made the the worse possible start. Within a minute Liam Nash nipped in to chip the ball over Lamar Johnson to give the Jammers the an early lead.

Millers slowly grew into the game but didn’t offer much in the way of chances early on. Max Mitchell and Adalberto Pinto had long ranged efforts both going over the bar.

Ex-Miller Liam Nash was at the heart of everything Maldon & Tiptree produced as he set up Sam Newson, but he fired into the stanchion behind the goal. Nash next set up Montel Agyemang who was denied by a flying save from Lamar Johnson.

The first yellow card of the game went to the hosts after Curtis Haynes-Brown cynically took out Adalberto Pinto, just when the Millers player had looked to have broken through a stubborn defence.

The Millers were then awarded two yellow cards in the space of a minute. Pinto was adjudged to have dived and was given a yellow card, but two minutes before that Rhys Henry was told to get up by the referee after throwing himself to the floor looking for a penalty, but received no booking.
Kris Newby was then booked for a nothing foul on Agyemang. Only two minutes past that and Michael Toner was in the book for a committed challenge on Nash.

The Millers ended the first half the better as Jeremiah Maja nodded inches wide at the back post. That chance was followed by Mason Bloomfield who was inches away from finding the bottom corner with the last kick of the half.

The second half saw a much better performance from the Millers. Jeremiah Maja almost squeezed in the equaliser after the Jammers keeper made a mistake. From the resulting corner Tommy Spillane almost scored from close range but Daniel Wilks made up for his earlier error by saving low down.

Next up was a penalty for the hosts. It was a soft one as Jordan Peart was penalised for a slight pull back on Liam Nash. But if that was a penalty, the Millers could easily have had four or five with every single ball into the Jammers area ending up Hussain Jaffa, Gaz Dauti and Tommy Spillane being held and pulled down to the floor, with nothing being given. Liam Nash stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty away to double the hosts lead. Jordan Peart was also given a yellow card.

But the Millers were not downhearted and kept going; Jeremiah Maja was causing the hosts trouble. His cross took a deflection off of Montel Agyemang and found its way into the back of the net to give the Millers a glimmer of hope with nineteen minutes remaining.

There was yet another twist in the game as Michael Toner was shown a second yellow card and red card for a soft foul in the centre of the pitch.
The Millers should have had the opportunity to get back on level terms from a penalty of our own, however appeals were waved away. Jeremiah Maja was taken out when he seemed to be through on goal in the box, but it wasn’t awarded.

Deep into added on time the hosts wrapped it all up with another penalty. Lamar Johnson was penalised and Liam Nash had the opportunity to get his hat-trick and took that chance by shooting stragith down the middle.

A disappointing end to a game where the Millers looked value for at least a point on the second half performance. Aveley’s next game is at home to Soham Town Rangers on Saturday 11th of March, kick off 3pm.
