MEMBERS of the Housing Overview and Scrutiny committee heard about the potential impact of the Government’s recent Housing White Paper last Tuesday evening (21 March).
Committee members learned of the proposed approach to national housing policy, reflecting the increase of people living in the private rented sector and reduction in owner-occupiers.
Thurrock itself has seen a 15% rise in private-rented tenants in the last 10 years. The paper also aims to stimulate delivery of new homes.
The committee welcomed many elements of the paper and benefits some policies may bring to Thurrock residents.
Chair of the Committee, Cllr Gerard Rice, said: “The new national planning framework should deliver more affordable homes which would be well received including modular housing. Government appears to recognise the challenge many places face including Thurrock.”
Comments on the White Paper can be submitted up until 2 May. The committee requested sight of the council’s response.
