Woodford Wells CC 1st XI 221-8
Orsett & Thurrock CC 1st XI 207-10
By Bill West
ORSETT & Thurrock lost their first league game of the campaign away at Division One leaders Woodford Wells.
The hosts won the toss and batted first and reached 221 from their 50 overs. Mitch McGee was the mainstay of the innings as he made a patient 65 from 97 balls, while Jack Johnson (42) and Gareth James (41) provided valuable support in the middle order. Shahid Khan picked up four wickets for the visitors, Paul Bennett got two victims while there was one each for Nawaz Ahmad Jan and Umaad Sultan.
The run-chase didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, with the score at a worrying 49-3. But opener Umar Ayub (73) and Kirk Laws (29) put on a 71-run partnership to give Orsett & Thurrock hope. But Ayub was dismissed by Jonathan Gaffney, who also ran through the lower order to end up with 6-59. Even when Nawaz Ahmad Jan (32) was out with the score on 196-9, the visitors still had a chance. But they just fell short of the total and was agonisingly only six balls away from a draw.
