GE17: Thurrock candidates round on BBC Essex after Jackie Doyle-Price “no show” in live debate

Candidates

ON Thursday morning, BBC Essex held a General Election candidates debate live from the High House Production Park in Purfleet.

In attendance was Labour’s John Kent, Ukip’s Tim Aker and Lib-Dem candidate, Kevin McNamara.

The host, Sadie Nine informed listeners that Conservative candidate, Jackie Doyle-Price had declined an invitation to attend.

The hour long programme was peppered with references to the non-appearance of Ms Doyle-Price but both John Kent and Tim Aker became increasingly irritated by the BBC Essex host reading out quotes from Jackie Doyle-Price.

At one stage, John Kent replied to a question by calling Ms Nine “Jackie”.

After the meeting, UKIP issued a statement.

Cllr Tim Aker MEP said: “Jackie Doyle-Price decide to take the cowardly option and dodge the first hustings of the Thurrock campaign.

“She is scared to defend the Conservative policies of building the Thames Crossing through Thurrock. She is scared to defend the Conservative policies of a dementia tax. She is scared to defend the Conservative policies of closing services at Orsett Hospital.

“UKIP are the only party to include in its manifesto a pledge to scrap the current Thames Crossing proposals. Thurrock needs a new MP, Thurrock needs a UKIP MP.”
