FIRE Crews were called this morning (Sunday 9 July) to a fire involving quarter of an acre of corn which was alight.
Station Officer Evan Jelliss said:
“Fires like this need a lot of manpower as they spread quickly.
“Thankfully it was not too windy today, but beaters, rather than water, are most effective at putting out these fires, meaning it was necessary for us to request back up from a number of stations.
“Our crews worked hard to stop the fire spreading to the main road.
“We are particularly grateful to members of the public who saw the incident and brought us cold drinks while we worked to extinguish the fire.”
Firefighters used beaters to extinguish the fire by just after 12.30pm.
The cause has been recorded as undetermined.
