Hidden Gems continues to engage community across Thurrock

HIDDEN GEMS

HIDDEN Gems, Thurrock’s celebration of Creativity, Community and Culture delivered by Thurrock CVS and Creative Blast has continued apace over the Easter Holidays with various free, fun and engaging creative activities for local people.

On Wednesday 4 April, 42 local 6-10 year old children were treated to a Page-to-Stage, Roald Dahl themed workshop at Thameside Theatre where they got to learn, devise and perform scenes, songs and a dance from the story of Matilda led by local theatre-maker Tom Mangan. On Saturday 7 April, Stanford-le-Hope residents and members of the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus enjoyed a poetry writing session with acclaimed Channel 4-featured poet Olmo Lazarus. On Wednesday 11 April, local people were treated to a poetry and prose writing and performance workshop with critically acclaimed poet John Akinde and LAMDA Deputy Chief Examiner Marcia Carr. On the same day local painter Matt Harris will be teaching members of local disability charity BATIAS how to paint landscapes.

Our programme continues with inclusive Dance Artist Mandy Wild from Creative Blast who will be working with BATIAS in a World music inspired workshop, whilst Tilbury artist Arooj Khan will be visiting Purfleet Community Hub’s after-school club for a creative map-making session, whilst Thurrock Golden Voices will be putting their best foot forward in a Bollywood Dance workshop.

We have also been continuing our Community Conversations, discovering local people’s favourite things in Thurrock, as well as barriers to taking part in creative and community-led initiatives in the borough at a variety of community centres and hubs throughout the week. On Thursday 12 April we spoke to people at Corringham Library and the South Ockendon Centre from 10.30am – 12.30 on Tuesday 17 April.

Finally, the project will be hosting a FREE May Day Community Festival at the South Ockendon Centre on Bank Holiday Monday, 7 May from 11am – 3pm. Expect performances, food, conversation and interactive creative activities and games throughout the day, all delivered by local people!
