All Together For Dementia – A Cupcake Day to Remember

All Together For Dementia – A Cupcake Day to Remember

Health leaders, providers of dementia support, social work teams and a person with dementia got together on Cupcake Day to make a difference for people with dementia in south west Essex.

On 14 June, a Cupcake sale was positioned in the Civic Offices, with many other sales across south west Essex, including; Alzheimer’s Society, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital, Brentwood Community Hospital, Basildon and Brentwood CCG,

Dementia Crisis Support Team, Essex Partnership University Trust Dementia Services, Midlands and Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, NELFT, Thurrock Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Thurrock Council, Inclusion Thurrock.

Almost £1000 was raised across south west Essex to support Alzheimer’s Society and research into improving outcomes for people with Dementia.

Irene Lewsey, Head of Transformation, Thurrock Clinical Commissioning Group said: “I was really touched by the support and camaraderie in this initiative. From suggesting we did something amazing for dementia and now seeing the support we have in Thurrock and the wider area, I really feel this shows how well we work in partnership. All the agencies have come together for dementia.”

Gemma Tomsett, Dementia Support Manager at Alzheimer’s Society said: “We were amazed at the level of support for this day, there must have been over 300 cakes in Thurrock’s Council and CCG Offices alone. Working together to beat dementia is what Alzheimer’s Society and Cupcake Day is all about. We are now working with all of these agencies and local businesses to turn Thurrock in to a dementia friendly place to be.”

In addition to the sale, a bake off style cupcake competition was held, with winning entries from North East London Commissioning Support Unit (NELCSU), Dementia Crisis Support Team and Thurrock CCG. Among our judges was, Mary, a person living with dementia and her social worker Ashley.
