Christmas comes early as Give a Gift store opens
THE Christmas cheer began for Thurrock this week as sponsors, councillors, volunteers and foster carers came together to launch the Give a Gift shop at intu Lakeside.
Cllr Barbara Rice, Mayor of Thurrock, cut the ribbon on Monday 26 November, officially marking the opening of the store.
The Give a Gift initiative offers members of the public the opportunity to donate a present to a Thurrock child in need who may not otherwise receive one on Christmas Day.
Once again the process is very simple: when the shop opens anyone can come in and pick a red star off the tree, each of which represents a child in need in the borough, and purchase a gift for them.
This donation is then returned to the shop and checked by the Give a Gift teams, wrapped by council staff volunteers and then passed on to social workers who hand deliver the presents to each child in time for Christmas Day. Gold stars are also available on our Christmas tree, which members of the public receive after making a donation to the Mayor’s charity Giving for Thurrock (GiFT).
Located next to HSBC on the House of Fraser end of the ground floor, also offers a ‘cosy corner’ to promote Thurrock fostering and Giving for Thurrock (GiFT).
Cllr Sue Little, Portfolio Holder for Children’s and Adults Social Services said, “I’m delighted to open our magical Give a Gift store and invite everyone to come along and pick a star off our tree to support Thurrock’s children in need.
“The generosity of residents we’ve seen over the past two years has been outstanding, with literally thousands of presents being donated and making their way to those who would not otherwise receive a present on Christmas Day.
“I’d like to thank intu Lakeside, McLaren Group, Lintons, Ikea Lakeside, PrintWarehouse and Tesco Lakeside who have supported the setup of the unit this year, as well as our council staff who have been busy behind the scenes for months bringing this to life.”
