BUSINESS numbers are soaring in south Essex, with Southend, Basildon and Thurrock welcoming more businesses than anywhere else in the county.

Figures published by a company formation firm revealed that more new businesses were established in Essex during 2018 than in any previous year.

Of the 17,063 companies registered the highest number was in Southend which had 2,125. This was followed by Thurrock with 1,963 and Basildon with 1,849.

Councillor James Courtenay, cabinet member for growth in Southend, said: “Southend is an attractive location and proposition for any new businesses to start up. As the local authority, we always look to provide local businesses with support and guidance when setting up here in Southend.

“Events such as the business partnership briefings give local businesses the opportunity to gain the knowledge and understanding of running a business in Southend.

“The council also provides support to businesses across Essex through the BEST Growth Hub, which gives free advice and support to both start-up and established businesses across the borough.

“It is worth noting that we do not solely help businesses start up, we help local people learn the skills needed to gain employment through a range of skills projects, particularly for young people, so that they can gain a greater understanding and help build a strong local economy.

“We are dedicated to continuing this growth of business in Southend and we are confident that through varied partnership work, the Airport Business Park will be able to house a wide-ranging set of businesses, providing a multitude of jobs and increasing the offer that Southend currently has.”

The £150million business park built on land owned by Southend Council is expected to create thousands of new jobs. In July, it was announced that Ipeco Holdings Limited, a leading manufacturer in aircraft crew seating, would be the first business to occupy the site.

The chairman of the Economic Development and Growth Committee in Basildon, Councillor Andrew Schrader, said: “Of course any report that reinforces Basildon is a great place to start your business or locate your business is welcome. We have a dedicated economic development team who support new and existing businesses to access funding, training, and recruitment advice and the resources to help them sustain and grow.

“We also actively hold events outside the borough to attract new businesses to base themselves in Basildon to boost economic growth and increase employment opportunities for our residents.”
