Ormiston Park Academy Launch Science Club at Aveley Primary

THE Science team at Ormiston Park Academy, in Aveley, were delighted to launch their new Science Club at local Aveley Primary School.

The academy, which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), is hosting the Science Club in collaboration with Aveley Primary’s Science Lead teacher Mr Sisterson. It follows science teachers visiting the school in December to deliver successful practical science lessons.

For the very first session of the new afterschool club, which will run every Thursday at 3:10-4pm, Ms Thacker and Ms Ryan from Ormiston Park’s Science department were accompanied by four incredibly helpful Year 7 Science Ambassadors: Ashley, Kerrie-Ann, Matthew and Ryan.

The students, ranging from Years 3 to 7, were given the opportunity to examine animal and plant cells under the microscopes. Using specialist stains, the students used membrane from an onion or cheek cell swabs to prepare their own slides, before learning how to adjust the microscopes to investigate the shape and detail of the different cells.

Next week, Ms Ryan and Mr Thorne will be heading down to the primary school to explore chromatography. Students in Years 7 and 8 at Ormiston Park will be able to put their name down every Monday to take part in the club that Thursday, with space for four students to join the club as Science Ambassadors.

Huw Derrick, Principal at Ormiston Park Academy, said:

“It was fantastic to hear just how engaged all of the students were in what is a fantastic initiative.

“During the session, the primary school students took the opportunity to ask our Science Ambassadors about their experiences at secondary school so far, their different teachers and their favourite subjects. Our Science Ambassadors are great role models to the younger students and help to make the subject even more fun and engaging.

“We can’t wait to see what else our Science department has in store for the afterschool club throughout the term.”
