Hockey: Thurrock men outgunned by Wapping

WITH only ten men, Thurrock faced a full strength Wapping side and were under heavy pressure from the start, forcing keeper Ryan Jones to make a string of last ditch saves.

Thurrock found it hard to break out of their half under the relentless Wapping attack and eventually conceded a goal from a short corner mid way through the half.

The visitors maintained their dominance forcing Thurrock into defensive mode but they held strong until five minutes before half time when a mis-hit shot took a wicked deflection off a Thurrock stick and crept inside the post.

In the second half, Thurrock increased their efforts and began to pass the ball better and Henry Hudson was unlucky to see a shot go inches wide after receiving a pass from Regan Harvey.

Strong tackling by Thurrock restricted the visitors and they forced several short corners. In the forty-fifth minute a quickly taken free hit saw the ball moved rapidly up the pitch to catch Thurrock pushing too far up and producing an easy third goal for Wapping.

Thurrock were undaunted and began to claim the upper hand and eventually being rewarded when Matthew Fleming dribbled around the keeper and scored. This inspired Thurrock and they played the better hockey forcing Wapping to fall back into defence to prevent Thurrock adding to their tally.

In the last minute a breakaway led to the award of a short corner which was converted to give the visitors a flattering score.
