FORMER pop star, David Van Day has won the Aveley and Uplands By-election.
The South Ockendon resident gained the seat from the Thurrock Independents (formerly Ukip).
The result will be a triumph for Cllr Van Day and his Conservative colleagues who, by all reports, worked tirelessly since the election was called when Tim Aker quit the seat.
The result may well also indicate that the Thurrock Independents are on their way out after “rebranding” from Ukip last year.
Result
David Van Day (The Conservative Party) – 773 (+16.4%)
Alan Field (Thurrock Independents) – 551 (-12.1%)
Charles John Curtis (Labour Party) – 394 (-1.5%)
Tomas Pilvelis (Liberal Democrat) – 55 (+3.1%)
Majority: 222
A total of 1781 votes were cast which was a turnout of 24.49%

Well the main thing here is that Labour didn’t win.
Interesting result. It may have some reflection on the mood of the country.
