TWO Thurrock buildings are set for demolition as the council continues its plan to make the most of the land it owns.
Applications have now been submitted to demolish Thurrock Adult Community College in Grays and the former library in Aveley.
A temporary home will be found for the college in Richmond Road ahead of finding it a new permanent base.
Work to demolish the single storey building and a pre-school is expected to start in January.
Both of the run-down buildings became too expensive for the council to maintain and run.
The Library moved to the Aveley Community Hub in the High Street in February.
Work to demolish its former home will begin in November.
Mark Coxshall, councillor responsible for regeneration, strategic planning and external relationships, said: “Aveley has been a long-term commitment. The adult college will be cleared and they will move into temporary buildings, possibly the building behind South Essex College and then we’ll decide what to do. We hope to make a long term decision soon.
“The next step will be to start to demolish the council offices as we move out of there and into a new building.”
The disposal of council land has been called a “fire sale” of assets to boost this year’s budget by £1million and streamline services.
The council has listed the latest 30 properties considered surplus to requirements and suitable for disposal including the Thameside Theatre.
The theatre in Grays is costing the council £500,000 to run and it estimates it would cost £16million to carry out the repairs and refurbishment the building needs.
The list also includes Chadwell Clinic in Chadwell St Mary, Riverside Youth Theatre, Tilbury and Woodlands Pre-School in Purfleet.
Nine acres of land are set to go if Warren Fishing Lakes in Stanford-le-hope is sold along with 6.8 acres in Cole Avenue, Chadwell St Mary.
The council council also announced the sale buildings used for two day centres and a Meals on Wheels service.
