NEW research by Moneybarn has revealed which stretches of the motorway you’re most likely to get fined for speeding in Essex, with the A282 trunk road, Dartford-Thurrock Crossing the most likely spot.
Moneybarn requested the data as part of a Freedom of Information Act request to local police forces.
Essex Police revealed the most fined stretches of motorways in their jurisdiction, with the A282 trunk road, Dartford-Thurrock Crossing camera by far the most common place to be caught speeding, with 14,370 fines in 2019-2020.
Tim Schwarz, Head of Marketing at Moneybarn says:
“Speeding cameras, although seen as inconvenient by drivers, are an important piece of equipment that saves lives. We wanted to ask local forces where they enforce the most speeding penalties, to reveal where drivers are most likely to get caught.
Hopefully, this encourages drivers to pay particular attention to their speed in these areas, thus reducing penalties and potentially saving lives. If you are caught speeding on a motorway by a camera, within two weeks you’ll be sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution, and a Section 172 notice, which you must return within 28 days to tell police who was driving the car. After you’ve sent this back, you’ll either receive a Fixed Penalty Notice or a letter telling you that you must go to court.
The maximum fine for speeding on a motorway is £2,500, and if you’re travelling at more than 100mph, you could face being banned for life, unless you can prove there were mitigating circumstances, such as an emergency. For smart motorways, where the speed limit is variable, the cameras can catch you driving above 70mph even when the variable limits aren’t in place, so we advise motorists to always be vigilant of their speed to avoid facing a penalty.
“Speeding anywhere is extremely dangerous, but on a motorway, the consequences can be devastating. That’s why the minute your car hits 71mph, you could face a fine.”
