University Centre South Essex is relaunching its ‘Rubbish Costume Competition’ again in June 2022. The success of last year’s competition saw entries of all ages from all across the UK showcasing their talent and inventiveness.
The ‘Rubbish Costume Competition’, allows entrants to use their innovation and creativity to create costumes, accessories or props out of everyday household objects or rubbish that can be recycled, upcycled or repurposed.
The competition is open to all, whatever age, gender or geographical location. Current and prospective students of University Centre South Essex are also welcome to enter. There are two categories, one for under 18s and one for over 18s. Entrants can produce an accessory, prop, portrait (head and shoulders) or full length costume (full body).
The University Centre is excited to see how entrants use everyday household items and objects to create stunning visual pieces. Any inspiration or reference points can be utilized, from a literal or conceptual approach.
Prizes for each category include £100 worth of sewing related materials and crafts.
Last year’s winners included a strong silhouetted design themed on science fiction fantasy by Lura Hepler and a dress made of face masks and embroidery by Beth-Rheanna Gibson.
Lou Cox, Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Costume Construction, said: “We were blown away by the success of last year’s competition entries and the variety of skills and ideas presented. It made the judging for the Costume Construction team very challenging. In the end, our 2021 winners were chosen due to the characterisation of the costume and the innovative use of material used. We are excited to see this year’s entries.”
