Football: Grays Athletic: Bantick at the double and Ronnie seals the Winn!

GRAYS produced an emphatic outcome to Saturday’s Isthmian North derby at Parkside to continue their unbeaten start to the season, even though the result perhaps flattered the Blues.

The visitors looked the better side for much of the first half but the hosts grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with two goals in the closing minutes of the first half.

The first came on 37 minutes when Joshua Osude played a low cross into the near post and Sam Bantick beat a defender to it and cleverly guided the ball past keeper Harry Girling from the most acute of angles.

A second goal followed just five minutes later when Bantick showed great opportunism to latch on to a long, bouncing throughball and clip the ball over the advancing Girling from the edge of the box. The keeper turned and desperately tried to chase the ball down as it bounced towards goal but it was in vain as keeper and ball hit the back of the net and Grays were two goals to the good.

Brentwood introduced former Grays player David Knight from the bench in a bid to get back into the match in the second half but it was to no avail and Grays grabbed a third two minutes from time.

There seemed little danger as Grays took a quick free kick towards sub Ronnie Winn, who had replaced Bantick on 73 minutes, but he showed great awareness and didn’t even take a touch before allowing the ball to roll into just the right place and drove it low and hard across Girling into the far side of the net.

Grays will hope to extend their unbeaten start to the season when they travel to Witham Town on Monday for a Bank Holiday fixture that kicks off at 3pm.
