
NEW research has revealed the top 10 English areas with the highest prevalence of obese people and Thurrock features in first place with 76% of residents classified as overweight or obese.
Health experts at Now Patient have looked into the percentage of adults classified as overweight or obese in England, Scotland and Wales to reveal the areas with the highest and lowest obesity rates.
They also looked into the number of Google searches for weight solutions from April 2022 – March 2023 to reveal the most weight-conscious areas of the UK.

The research also revealed the following:
- Islington is home to the fewest overweight people in England, with just 44% of its adults classified as overweight or obese.London boroughs dominate the top 10 English locations with the lowest obesity rates, with eight areas featuring.
- Orkney Islands and East Ayrshire have been named Scotland’s obesity capitals, with 75% of the population classified as overweight. In comparison, 53% of Edinburgh residents are classed as overweight, the lowest of any Scottish area.
- 79.9% of Blaenau Gwent residents have a BMI of over 25, which is the most of any Welsh area. The Welsh area with thelowest obesity rates is Powys at 50.0%.
- Caerphilly has been named the UK’s most weight-conscious area with 355 searches for weight loss solutions per 10,000 people. Following in second and third place are County Durham and Bridgend with 305 and 164 searches per 10,000 people respectively.
