You can attend any of the days and have a fantastic time at Cheltenham Racecourse but, for the full experience, plan on getting Friday tickets. That’s when the Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place, the festival’s — and one of the sport’s — main races of the year.

Here’s everything Thurrock residents need to know about attending.

Getting There

Cheltenham Festival takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire. Travelling from Thurrock to the racecourse takes around three hours in a car, either by taking the southernly M4 or the northern A40 road west.

It can be more relaxing to travel to the festival from central London via train, which takes around two hours. The train arrives at Cheltenham Spa, and shuttle buses to the racecourse are available from the station during the festival.

Day at the Races

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a big deal, so it’s important to dress appropriately. If in doubt, wear something that you’d wear to a cousin’s wedding — though pack some comfortable shoes to give your feet a break throughout the day.

As it stands, the leading contender for Gold Cup glory is Galopin Des Champs, who is the bookmakers’ favourite for victory by a long way. However, the unpredictability of horse racing means there will be people using oddschecker free betting deals to back outsiders to win. The website collates promotions from popular online sportsbooks who are offering bonuses for placing small bets. Second and third-favourites Fastorslow and Shishkin will both go into the race confident of pulling off an upset and will be under the watchful eye of bettors.

Keep in mind that there are seven races in total throughout Friday at the Cheltenham Races, so it’s best to arrive around 12:30 pm.

Where to Stay

It’s recommended to spend a night or two in Cheltenham. Doing so will allow you to fully embrace the lively atmosphere for which the festival is famous. The historic Ellenborough Park dates back to the 15th century and offers a five-star experience that includes an on-site spa. Travellers looking to be in the thick of the action may prefer The White Hart Inn, which offers cosy accommodation above a 16th century pub.
