A Good Time to Invest in Home Energy Systems? Government Grants in the UK and What They Can Mean for You

Home energy systems are such a crucial part of our everyday lives. But installing them is far from cheap. Currently, there are several grants and schemes offered by the UK government to prioritise energy efficiency in households across the country in an effort to lower carbon emissions.

In most cases, upgrades to energy systems have environmental as well as financial benefits. So, if you’re interested in making some changes that the planet and your wallet will thank you for, now might be the time to apply for a grant and install an efficient energy system for less.

Before applying for a grant, you will need to make sure that you meet its eligibility criteria. While each grant has its specific requirements, most of them are connected to income and benefits. Be sure to check what information you will need to provide, so that you can be prepared when you start the application process.

What you’ll also need to be mindful of is that some of these grants may not be available everywhere. As a homeowner in Thurrock, you can benefit from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the Energy Company Obligation Scheme (also known as ECO4), and the 0% VAT on clean energy solutions.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was launched in April 2022 to facilitate the reduction of the UK’s carbon emissions in an effort to meet the 2050 net zero emissions targets. This grant will run until 2028, so if you’re looking to make some changes to your home heating system, the next 5 years might be the best time to do so in order to benefit from this financial assistance.

With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you may be able to receive up to £5,000 to install a boiler with a lower environmental impact, such as a wood pellet boiler. You may also receive up to  £7,500 towards installing renewable energy sources, such as air or ground source heat pumps.

Compared to traditional heating systems (like gas boilers), the above-mentioned energy solutions are both more efficient and produce fewer carbon emissions. As a result, with a wood pellet boiler or a heat pump, you can save on your monthly energy bills, while also reducing your home’s carbon footprint.

If making huge changes like installing renewable energy systems isn’t feasible for you, even with the financial assistance from a grant like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you may want to consider how some more low-cost adjustments can help you reduce your environmental impact. For instance, you can look into the best combi boiler for a UK home to find an energy-efficient option that will waste less fuel to warm up your home and supply your hot water.

Another grant that can help with installing an energy-efficient heating system is the Energy Company Obligation Scheme, also referred to as the ECO4. This initiative was started in January 2013 with the aim of supporting households in England, Scotland, and Wales living in fuel poverty. Such households can receive financial support with upgrading their inefficient heating systems and transitioning to low-carbon solutions, such as energy-efficient boilers or heat pumps.

The ECO4 scheme also applies for solar panel installations. So, if you’re looking to make some adjustments to your electricity supply, it may be worth looking into how you can benefit from the ECO4 to install this renewable energy source. This scheme will run until the end of March 2026, so be sure to apply in a timely manner if you want to benefit from the ECO4 for heating or solar solutions.

When it comes to the VAT reduction, it started in April 2022 and will last until March 2027. What this means for you is that you can benefit from savings when it comes to the installation of green and efficient energy solutions such as solar panels and heat pumps.

Exactly how much you can save because of the 0% VAT measure will vary based on the system you’re installing and the installer you work with. So, make sure to look into your options and how the VAT reduction can work in your favour.

Overall, since all these grants and schemes offer significant financial assistance towards installing efficient energy solutions and switching to renewables, the coming years might be a good time to invest in upgrading the energy systems in your home. However, you will want to do some additional research to find out the eligibility criteria of the grant you want to apply for and calculate your budget for a boiler, heat pump, or solar panel installation.
