A MOTHER and son from south Essex are urging others to follow in their footsteps and start a career in care.

Sarah Fogarty and her son Josh share a love of caring. They work together at Carers Choices where they support adults that have dementia and other disabilities.

Both Sarah and Josh say that working in care is not only rewarding, but it also offers many opportunities too. Sarah began her career in care after being an unpaid carer for her father. She has since worked at Carers Choices for the last 14 years.

Sarah said: “Working in care is one of the most rewarding careers possible. I feel extremely lucky to have been able to build such an extensive career in the industry.

“No two days are the same and no two individuals are the same, that’s why I love my role. Whether it’s taking clients out for lunch, for days at the seaside, or running activities at the centre. Every day presents a different challenge.

“My advice for anyone considering a career in care would be to go for it. It truly is one of the most fulfilling things you can do.

Josh works with his mum at Carers Choices and has been there for eight years. He supports the day centre and helps clients with transport. He also assists with the maintenance of vehicles.

Josh said: “The best part of care work is seeing the impact your work has on clients. You also get to watch their confidence grow over time.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, one of our clients was extremely anxious to leave her house. We worked together and rebuilt her confidence to get out. We started going shopping once a week, and over time she now comes to the centre four times a week.

“That is one of my proudest moments. It is the exact reason I love working in this industry, and why I would recommend a career in care to anyone.”

Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Essex County Council said: “In talking about their experiences, Sarah and Josh have expressed far more eloquently than I could just how rewarding a career in care can be. Their experience speaks volumes: of the fulfilment and job satisfaction; the ability to make a real difference to the lives of the people you support.

“Whether it’s working in a team, independently, in a care setting or in people’s own homes, there are a range of roles open across the county.

“Day in, day out, extraordinary people are doing extraordinary things, to help others lead ordinary lives.  You can join them by applying now for a rewarding future and a career you’ll be proud of.”

There are opportunities for people of all ages within the care sector. Roles are open to those starting their career, who already have experience or are looking for a career change.
