THE latest in Chelmsford Racecourse’s Thursday evening series arrives this week with another action-packed eight-race card under the lights in Essex.

The opening contest of the evening sees a field of 13 two-year-old’s take part in the fillies’ restricted novice stakes in class five over seven furlongs (4.55). This race gives Bouvier the perfect chance to open her account for trainers Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, having chased home a useful sort at Kempton last time out and there doesn’t appear to be that calibre of horse in the opener.
Race two on the card is a seven furlong handicap in class six (5.30) and six runners are set to take it on. Preference leans the way of Amaysmont for trainer Kevin Frost, who has thrived since switching to the all weather and has three twins this year, including over course and distance. In a tricky looking contest, Lady Wingalong can mask her presence felt off the back of a third at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago, while four-time course and distance winner Thomas Equinas equally cannot be ruled out.
Eight runners will line up for race three of the evening (6.00) and Capricorn King makes his polytrack debut with the first-time blinkers on for the in-form Jason Quinn yard and steps up in trip which should suit, while race four (6.30) can go the way of Aegean Prince on debut for Godolphin powerhouse Charlie Appleby, a Dubawi colt that has to be of serious interest given his connections – a first foal of a smart mare that stayed this one mile and two furlong trip.
Jenson Benson looks the one to beat in race five of the Thursday night card at 7.00, with the four-time course winner running off a lowly mark of 58 having been a credible third in a course and distance handicap 21 days ago. Of his rivals, Switchel is still a maiden but gave a good showing when second in a course and distance contest three weeks ago so rates the main danger.
Sir Rodneyredblood came within inches of adding to his Chelsmford haul of four when a short second just a week back and dropping back to five furlongs in the class five handicap (7.30) should give him the edge over Twilight fun for the Chelsea Banham team, two wins from six this year and a career-best outing when landing a ten-runner handicap at this track 40 days back.
The penultimate race on the Thursday card (8.00) can go the way of Monsieur Kodi, who is on a losing run of 13 starts but was fourth at Catterick last time out and can certainly be a danger if he reproduces that form on the polytrack for the first time, whole the finale of the meeting (8.30) sees Hat Toss for the upwardly-mobile James Owen yard very much in the frame off the back of a third at Kempton and winning at Sandown back in August.
