THE second of two meetings at Chelmsford this week takes place on Saturday with a bumper nine-race card following on from Thursday’s meeting.

Racing gets underway this weekend at 4.30pm with a novice stakes in class four before the action comes to a close four hours later at 8.30pm with a class two handicap worth a cool £13,000 to the winner.

The opening contest on the card sees a field of 14 runners head to the stalls for the novice stakes in class four as the two-year-old’s take centre stage (4.30). Royal Alliance was well-backed and landed a nine-runner novice at Newcastle 25 days ago and looks the type to improve further. He is taken to get the job done ahead of Akkramm from the Roger Varian yard, sixth of 13 on debut at Sandown in a novice contest but wasn’t knocked about in what was a very hot race and is more than capable hands with his trainer. Beccali, a whopping €580,000 Lope De Vega colt, is back in action for the powerful Godolphin yard having failed to fire over six furlongs twice but is now stepped up in trip to see if it can provide a breakthrough.

Race two is in division one of the class six handicap (5.00) and this one can go the way of course and distance winner No Saint, who improved on recent efforts to score in an 11-runner handicap at Southwell nine days ago for trainer Sam England, whole division two of the same discipline marks race three of the evening (5.30) looks to be all about Just Ten High for the Dylan Cunha team, a winner over course and distance and at Southwell in the Autumn to represent the best form on show and is off a lenient-looking mark to boot.

Ten runners will head to the stalls for race four of Chelmsford’s card (6.00) and Initial Blue is taken to build on his encouraging debut at Wolverhampton and goi four spots better and get off the mark, Of his rivals, the Michael Bell-trained Camera Shy enters calculations too off a winning debut at Newmarket before an interesting trip to Milan in Italy to race didn’t quite pay off but excuses can be made for his run there.

Preference in race five of the evening (6.30) goes to Dubai Magic in the six-furlong nursery contest, with James Tate’s two-year-old lightly raced and stepping back to a preferred trip judged on her career so far should swing things in her favour, while race six on the card (7.00) should go the way of Startling for the David O’Meara team, a winner of a nursery contest over course and distance 30 days ago so the form is very much there for all to see.

A class four handicap over the five furlong sprint distance is race seven of the evening (7.30) and Bang On The Bell, a course and distance winner previously, is taken to make a winning return to the all weather surface after a good second at Newmarket eight days ago, while of the seven runners heading to the start for the penultimate race of the evening (8.00), the selection goes to Genesius for Sir Mark Prescott, without a win in 14 runs but shaped well at Newbury 14 days ago before unseating his rider and previous good form on this surface means he is the one to beat.

The card comes to a close at 8.30pm with the feature race of the evening at 8.30pm as nine runners will battle it out in the class two handicap over the one mile and two furlong distance. Dual course and distance winner Penzance completed an all-weather four-timer in March at Lingfield and was second in the Easter Classic afterwards, plus should be race fit after a solid third in a Listed Kempton contest on Monday. Intricacy was a winner for the Simon & Ed Crisford team in Dubai earlier this year and could be worth a second look back on British shores, while the James Ferguson-trained Diderot cannot be discounted either as all four of his career wins have come on the all-weather – including over a mile at this track back last year.
