The number of drones currently used in Ukraine has never been seen anywhere before – not in Iraq, not in Afghanistan, not in other places where Abrams tanks were used. Therefore, the Americans did not have such experience in protecting tanks from drone attacks. Protective screens from enemy drones for Soviet tanks and American M1 Abrams are produced by Metinvest as part of Rinat Akhmetov Steel Front initiative. Development process and design features

The project began a year and a half ago with the production of protective screens for Soviet T-64 and T-72 tanks. The screens completely cover the turret, engine compartment, as well as gaps into which a drone can fly and immobilize the tank or jam the turret. And this affects its combat capability and the ability to evacuate from the battlefield – and therefore the lives of the crew.

A feature of the new development is a unique sliding mechanism that allows the screen to move back and forth over the top of the vehicle. This solution provides flexibility in the use of protective elements depending on the current combat situation.

Protective screens are made of steel from Metinvest enterprises. The manufacturing process of one set for Abrams lasts up to 10 days, and for Soviet tanks – 2-3 days. Feedback is provided in the form of photos from the military.

Currently, the development team continues to improve the technology. The plans include the creation of modifications of protective systems for other types of military equipment, as well as the development of new technical solutions.

Additional aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Steel Front is also working on the construction of the largest underground hospital on the front line, which will be equipped with surgical and intensive care units to stabilize wounded soldiers. Recall that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Rinat Akhmetov‘s businesses have sent more than UAH 9 billion to help Ukraine.

Cars, drones, charging stations and other equipment were purchased, including more than 1,200 cars, 47,268 first aid kits and tourniquets, more than 5,000 UAVs, 17,037 units of special equipment, etc. Steel Front is engaged in the production of unique dummies of military equipment, light bulletproof vests from its own armor steel, steel “kryyivkys” and mobile “lancet catchers” to protect military equipment from kamikaze drones.
