Why Staycations Keep Getting More Popular

Enjoying a memorable, refreshing holiday needn’t mean boarding a plane and travelling to a foreign country. If you’re based in the UK, you’ll be pleased to learn that you already live in a country with an enormous amount of culture, natural beauty, and history to explore and uncover.

Every year in the UK, millions of people elect to take a holiday inside the country – and this figure is rising. Around four fifths of UK consumers report their intention to stay at least one night in a UK hotel each year. But what is it that’s driving this trend? Let’s consider a few important motivating factors.

Economic Factors Driving Staycations

To begin with, it should be noted that staycations tend to be more affordable. Once you’ve cut out the cost of travel, border control, and other administrative fees associated with overseas travel, the appeal of a domestic holiday becomes obvious. Around 30% of those surveyed by VisitBritain’s annual Domestic Sentiment Tracker cite the ‘rising cost of living’ as a barrier to venturing overseas.

Rediscovery of Local Attractions

One of the enduring legacies of the Covid-19 pandemic is a newfound appreciation of what the UK has to offer. For the best part of a year, UK residents were forbidden from travelling overseas. By necessity, they began to look seriously at local attractions and cultural sites. That habit has remained with many, who might take holidays in the UK alongside the ones they take overseas. Around 81% of Brits believe UK holidays can expand horizons, according to a poll commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages

Environmental and Convenience Considerations

Environmental concerns are more pressing than they ever have been. A large majority of younger people, and a significant number of older ones, believe that climate change is being driven by human activity. The evidence suggests that foreign holidays, especially those which involve air travel, are significantly more polluting than domestic ones. Thus, it’s rational for any environmentally-conscious holidaymaker to prefer a staycation.

There’s also the considerable advantage of convenience. If you’re travelling in the UK, then you might spend much less time on the road – and you won’t have to deal with security checks and passport control.

Diverse Staycation Options

When you take a break in the UK, you’ll have a wide array of options to choose from. You might stay in the middle of a major city, or beside the seaside, or in the middle of the countryside. Walking holidays in the UK are hugely popular, and destinations like the New Forest in Hampshire are perfect places to enjoy this form of break.

Investment in Domestic Tourism Infrastructure

Those who take their holidays in the UK ensure that their money is pumped into the economy of the UK. The tourism industry in the UK has enjoyed an influx of funding, mostly in response to post-COVID demand. For example, Center Parcs recently invested £22 million into overhauling its Aqua Sana spa facilities.
