A DEVELOPER has launched a public consultation on plans to build 412 homes in Corringham reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Mulberry Strategic Land says it is hoping to submit an outline planning application for the homes on land to the north of Southend Road.

Along with the new homes, Mulberry says it will build a new primary school, a care home and a 2,000sq metre supermarket on the 54-acre site. The proposed homes will be low rise, up to three-storeys high.

In its consultation, the developer said: “With everything to serve the community’s needs on its doorstep, we would like to create a great place to live in North East Corringham – a new neighbourhood which fits in to the wider Corringham community, with the benefits shared by both.

“We are now keen to progress the plans and have taken the time to consider the feedback to the previous proposals, taking it into consideration while developing our new plans. This includes the addition of a new shop for local residents, along with a new school and care home.”

Thurrock had 4,919 people on its social housing waiting list in 2024 and just 173 homes were built in the borough between 2022-2023.

The developer added: “There is a serious need for more housing for local people.

“We believe that this development will help to play its part by providing policy-compliant levels of affordable housing, as well as delivering significant economic benefits through investment in the local area.”

Last year Mulberry came under fire for suggesting Thurrock’s planning committee had little choice but to approve plans for up to 1,000 homes on green belt in East Tilbury.

It followed the Government’s stated intention of building 1.5 million new homes and reviewing green belt policy. The company subsequently won an appeal to the planning inspectorate leaving the council with an £87,000 legal bill.

Cogent Land LLP submitted applications for up to 750 homes on the land in 2014. These were later withdrawn.

The consultation is open until August 1. For more information, visit www.northeastcorringham.co.uk
