ESSEX Police spotted over 77,000 speeding offences in the space of just one year.

New data gathered by Legal Expert reveals that the force caught 77,573 people speeding in the year ending March 2025.

Speeding drivers get three points added to their license as a minimum. Reaching 12 points within three years will disqualify them from driving.

The fixed penalty for speeding is £100. That means that a whopping £7,757,300 worth of potential penalties were racked up in Essex in 2024/25–although not every incident led to a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).

A case in point is the A176 Nethermayne/Ashdon Way crossroads. The Basildon junction was the ‘worst’ place in Essex for speeding, with the police capturing 9,600 incidents. That works out at more than one offence every hour on average.

Yet only around a quarter of cases (2,457) led to an FPN being handed out.

The M11 also featured heavily in police reports of speeding. Across the year, 7,923 people were spotted going too fast on the motorway, which has a 70mph speed limit.

If the A13 trunk road going from Ship Lane Bridge to Purfleet Road Bridge in Aveley was bad (4,115 speeding drivers), then it was barely any better going the other way (4,075 drivers).

And Southend’s Arterial Road appeared three times in the top 20 list, thanks to heavy speeding activity at two junctions as well as on the road itself.
