THURROCK Council is considering plans to turn the former Tilbury Police Station into flats reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

An application has been submitted seeking planning permission for the change of the former station in Civic Square, Tilbury to accommodate nine flats.

These will be two and three-bedroom flats, with car parking spaces, bike storage and waste and recycling facilities.

Last month, Thurrock Council quashed rumours that the building was being used to house asylum seekers and said the building remained empty and out of use.

The site occupies a prominent corner position in a shopping area within the square. The site is very close to the Tilbury Clock Tower War Memorial. This Grade II listed war memorial is directly opposite the site and the applicant says any proposals should “fully respect the setting of this heritage asset”.

The rear yard area proposed to be entirely given over to parking and storage, and with no useable amenity space for the occupiers of the scheme.

The site is within a flood plain but it is considered this can be mitigated.

The applicant said: “The proposed development of this brownfield land site represents a good reuse of this sustainable town centre site to help the council meet its housing targets.

“This development, subject to appropriate conditions and section 106 agreement, would provide nine additional new homes, including family sized homes, with good levels of sunlight and daylight and noise insulation, fire safety and outlook.”

They added: “There would be minimal harm or disruption if any to neighbouring occupiers. The internal heights of the building will be built up in order to overcome flood risk associated with this location.

“With regard to the Council’s shortage of housing and its housing needs targets, the presumption in favour of granting planning permission applies in this case.”

The station has been closed down since 2016.

The property was put on the market in 2022 as a “potential development opportunity”, with an initial guide price of £1 million, though that was later dropped to £850,000. It was sold by Essex Police in October last year.
