FOLLOWING a decision of the Council’s Cabinet earlier in 2025, Basildon Council has confirmed overnight street lighting is being reinstated borough wide from Monday, 15 September.

This follows conclusion of a formal agreement between Basildon Council and Essex County Council to restore overnight lighting, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to improve community safety.

In June, Basildon Council’s Cabinet approved this important measure in response to repeated feedback from residents emphasising how vital street lighting is to their sense of security at night.

Reprogramming began on 15 September, and all streetlights are expected to be operational by the end of the week.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, said:

“We promised to turn the streetlights back on all night, and I’m pleased to confirm the deal with Essex County Council is now in place. Starting Monday, 15 September, streetlights will be on throughout the night across the borough, with full coverage expected by Friday, 19 September.

“So, if you’re a shift worker and you’re getting home late at night or leaving early in the morning or whatever your reasons are for being out and about throughout the evening, the streetlights will be on, making our communities safer.

“This is another promise delivered by the council – we promised residents we’re going to make our communities safer and turning the streetlights on is a big part of it and that’s now been delivered.”
