JEN Craft, Member of Parliament for Thurrock, has raised awareness of growing uncertainty over the future of a disability charity in the borough.

Thurrock Centre for Independent Living (TCIL), which provides support and advice on a variety of issues affecting disabled people in Thurrock, has said it is at risk of closure next year.

The charity’s World of Work Project – which provides employment support to learning disabled people – is currently being funded through the Council. However, there is uncertainty about the future of this contract once it expires in March 2026, given current pressure on Council budgets. According to TCIL, without additional funding, their financial situation may become unsustainable.

Local MP Jen Craft has expressed her support for the charity and the services they offer to disabled people locally.  An important part of this is assisting individuals through government processes – such as applying for welfare entitlements – which can often be difficult for people with a learning disability. TCIL has said it is particularly struggling to cover the costs of this advocacy work in the short term.

In a letter to the Council, Mrs Craft asked for every possible option to be considered in funding the charity going forwards. Particularly, the local MP asked if there were any existing skills funding pathways or opportunities that could be used to support the services offered by TCIL.

Jen Craft, MP for Thurrock, said:

“Having met with TCIL on multiple occasions, I’m really concerned about the potential loss of this service.

“Their advocacy and advice are really valued by many disabled members of our community, helping people navigate some of the challenges they face.

“That’s why I’ve asked the Council to look at exploring all avenues for securing support for the charity, so our community in Thurrock can continue to access this important resource.”
