THIS week, Forever Young celebrated its first anniversary — and received wonderful news that it will be awarded the Thurrock Mayoral Roll of Honour. This prestigious recognition celebrates those who have made Thurrock a better place to live, work, learn and play, shining a light on individuals, community groups, charities, and businesses that have gone above and beyond to serve our great borough in extraordinary ways.
It is a fitting tribute to a year of laughter, friendship, and quiet dedication that has brought people together in the heart of Little Thurrock.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a much-loved weekly gathering. Every Monday, whatever the weather, the doors of The Ship Pub open to welcome local residents for conversation, games, and shared lunches in good company. It is warm, relaxed, and inclusive — a place where everyone feels part of something special.
In a community with few local amenities, Forever Young has filled an important gap. For many, it is far more than just an afternoon out — it’s a lifeline of connection, friendship, and belonging. Groups like this play a vital role in easing loneliness and strengthening community ties, offering consistency and care to those who might otherwise spend their days alone.
None of this would be possible without the tireless dedication of the volunteers who make it happen week after week. Sam, Davina, Jan, Martin, and Billy give their time freely, ensuring every detail is thoughtfully arranged — from the games and raffles to the lunches and dinners that everyone looks forward to. Their kindness and commitment are the heart of Forever Young.
As Jeanette Mitchell shared:
“I went for the first time last November, walking in very nervously. I was soon put at ease as I was asked to join one of the tables and was soon chatting to the friendly people sitting there. I look forward to Mondays — it’s such good fun, and I’ve made many friends. Such a brilliant idea, Davina and Sam, and thank you to everyone involved xx.”
And Pauline Muggeridge, one of the original members, added:
“I was one of the original members, and I’ve watched it grow. I walked in alone and was made to feel so welcome. I look forward to Monday afternoons and have made some really good friends. A huge thank you to those who give their time to help run this — we’ve said we don’t know what we’d do if it ever stopped! xx.”
Their words capture everything Forever Young represents — friendship, belonging, and the enduring power of community spirit.
Here’s to Forever Young — to its first wonderful year, to the well-deserved recognition of its volunteers, and to many more Mondays still to come.
