MAJOR updates to many leisure centres and public swimming pools across Essex have been planned. Updates include new lifts, toilets and access ramps as part of a £300,000 project to “remove barriers” for people wanting to use the facilities reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

The plans by Basildon Borough Council will see £38,000 invested in special educational needs and disabilities hubs across the borough, and £92,000 allocated for the installation of special lifts for people with disabilities at Wickford Swimming Pool and Basildon Sporting Village.

Residents welcomed the investment and insisted that they needed more investment in facilities for the disabled. Mary Knight, 67, from Basildon, said: “This is not before time and should have been done before now. Without improvements and changes like this, many disabled people simply can’t use, enjoy or even visit many of the leisure, sporting and other services. It’s so good to see this being done as it feels like it’s overlooked or forgotten at times.”

The investment will also see £60,000 spent to improve Lake Meadows play area equipment, £12,000 for an accessibility ramp at Lee Chapel North Community Centre and £60,000 to install a special toilet facility in Basildon Town Centre, providing a “safe, fully accessible space for residents and carers and supporting longer visits.”

Melissa McGeorge, councillor for ageing population and health, said: “This investment will have a tangible and positive impact on the everyday lives of residents, helping to remove barriers and create spaces that are welcoming, inclusive and fit for everyone. The disabled facilities grant allows us to focus on practical solutions that promote independence, dignity and wellbeing, ensuring residents can access the facilities and services they need within their own communities.”
