THE Reanimating Coalhouse Fort project has taken a significant step forward due to an award of £10,000 from Historic England’s Capacity Building Grant Programme.

This vital investment will support essential project foundations, such as the recruitment and training of volunteers. The funds will also assist the development of a business plan and long term funding strategy, plus establish a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

This new funding arrives at a pivotal moment, as all major project commissions have now been appointed and work is underway to shape the next chapter of Coalhouse Fort.

Cllr John Kent, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability, Arts, Culture and Heritage, explains:
“This latest investment from Historic England marks another major step forward for Coalhouse Fort. It gives us the tools, expertise and capacity we need to protect this extraordinary landmark and bring it back into meaningful use for our communities. The work now underway lays strong foundations for a sustainable future; one that honours its heritage while creating new opportunities for culture, learning and engagement.”

Tony Calladine, East of England Regional Director, Historic England, said: “We’re pleased to add further support for the rejuvenation of Coalhouse Fort with this Capacity Building Grant to support the development of the Reanimating Coalhouse Fort project and getting local people involved in creating a future life for this important community landmark.”
