THE first set of potentially 4,000 new council homes in Basildon, built over the next 10 years, has been completed. The new social rent homes have been “prioritised for Basildon residents, veterans and key workers” according to the borough council reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

The homes have been built by developer Sempra Homes on sites Broadmayne, Laindon Link and Tyefields. In total, 166 homes have been built across the sites, with 87 for social renters and 13 others for shared ownership buyers.

It marks a first milestone in a local plan to build 4,000 new council houses over the next decade. Council leader Gavin Callaghan said he wanted to “clear” Basildon’s housing waiting list. Back in January, there were 3629 households on the council’s social housing waiting list.

Last month, the site off Broadmayne was named Sheppard Mews in honour of the late Don Sheppard, D-Day veteran and much-loved Basildon resident.
