SHOPPERS are being warned of “temporary minor disruption” as works continue on a new Aldi supermarket reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Workers are fitting out the new supermarket at Basildon’s Westgate Shopping Park and carrying out changes to the car park. The discount chain will take over the former One Beyond and JD Sports shops in the town centre.

Basildon Borough Council, which bought the park in summer 2024, has entered into a lease agreement with Aldi for the units. The council has warned of disruption during works. It comes as various workmen have been seen at the site.

Andy Barnes, the new Conservative council leader, said: “This shows this new administration’s commitment to the regeneration of Basildon Town Centre. We are determined to deliver a new retail offer that will appeal to shoppers across the area.”

Aldi is part of a huge overhaul plan by the former Labour leader of the council, Gavin Callaghan. Plans include around 550 homes, a hotel, an arts centre and the huge 3,500-seat arena. Last winter, the hotel and 95 homes were agreed upon for the site, as phase one. It also comes as 492 rental flats are under construction in the town centre.

Shoppers are delighted with the new Aldi store opening. Maurice Tilley, 67, said: “It’ll be a big draw for the town and get more people here and spending their hard-earned money. It’s great to see this investment, and I hope it only gets better from here.” The Aldi fan is also supportive of the wider regeneration.

Aldi declined to comment.
