A FREE event to help older people get to grips with the basics of a computer and the internet is being held later this week.
The Silver Surfers Day, which has been organised by Thurrock CVS, Thurrock Council’s Libraries team, University of London and NHS Choices, aims to encourage older people to become part of the technological revolution – as part of Adult Learners’ Week.
Free computer and internet taster sessions are being held on Friday, 21 May between 10am and 1pm at the Thurrock Learning Shop in Grays (next to Morrisons supermarket). The drop-in sessions are being hosted by young volunteers who will be providing useful hints and tips on how to use a computer and surf the web.
The event is suitable for older people with a limited or no experience of computers or the internet. A free gift and refreshments will be provided and simple handouts on web terminology, emailing, internet security, social networking and shopping and banking online will be available. Participants will also be able to find out more about the free “Wiser for IT” computer courses which are held in Thurrock’s libraries.
Frederick Briggs, 72‚ Age UK joint Internet Champion for 2010‚ said: “I started using the internet when I saw an advert for a computer class at my local Age Concern. At first I was nervous about attending, as I didn’t want to look like an idiot in front of people‚ but I managed to pluck up the courage and haven’t looked back. All the tutors were really helpful and patient‚ particularly a 17-year-old student who walked me through how to get online.
“I now use the internet for everything – from talking to my children and grandchildren online‚ to booking trips away. The internet has made a real difference to my life‚ so I would encourage any older people to give it a try – it’s never too late.”
