RESIDENTS in Thurrock are being thanked for their use of waste bring sites and their understanding during disruption caused by Unite the Union extending current strike action until Friday 18 June.
Cllr Andrew Jefferies, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We know that this unnecessary strike action by Unite the Union members is extremely disruptive for our residents and they are understandably frustrated. While the council has and is doing everything it can to resolve the matter, the only people that can bring this strike action to an end are Unite the Union. We are doing all we can to mitigate the impact of the strike with temporary drop-off points.
“I want to say thank you to all our residents who are using these bring sites correctly to dispose of bagged household waste, I know it is inconvenient to have to travel to dispose of your waste. I would please ask residents to use the sites responsibly, they must not be used to illegally fly-tip items outside of the opening hours. Enforcement staff will be on site to ensure the drop-off points are used properly.”
The extended strike action means there will be no household waste collections for any type of bin while Unite the Union members are striking up to and including Friday 18 June.
Eight temporary sites are currently available throughout the borough, as well as the Linford Tip (HWRC), for residents to drop-off household waste should they wish to do so. Please continue to follow government COVID-19 guidance when using these sites.

This is ridiculous now! People will be dumping all the stuff everywhere soon and then the council will fine them
How can I get rid of my waste.I am disabled and do not drive and I live on my own and am in my late 70s.

Does anyone worry about vermin infestation as the bags pile up, TBC like to see themselves as risk averse, they have not thought much about concluding the strike, arguing they are not cutting wages, who are they kidding, only themselves, see they thought they could do just as they like, when they brought in contractors to fill the void left by striking binmen, when AKAS got on board that soon stopped, but we as taxpayers are picking up the tab and TBC expect the residents to play the role of binmen and take our waste to these drop off sites, this is a real liberty, as they still take in our Council Taxes, for a service they are not providing, I wonder if they would pay for my journeys to and from the drop off point and for my time in doing it? whilst around the borough there are more foxes and more evidence of rats and mice in many of our estates, have they not thought about the effects of rat infestation, getting into our homes and especially the effects of leptospirosis (Weill’s Disease) which can kill.
THINK ABOUT YOUR LACK OF FORESIGHT, the same as you adopted for A13 works which has created a massive overspend and nuisance to road users of Thurrock (with hours of queuing), for works which should have long been finished. A LITTLE TIP signage o the lead into each end of the closure, advising drivers if they are in the lane that is closed off they are contributing to the delay, STAY IN ONE LANE and you would drive through at 20-30 mph, not sitting like idiots.
The effects of how you are managing the strike situation could go on for years as it will take time to get rid of rat infestation in residential areas, I personally have seen a number of rats through the day around my home. WHAT CONCERNS ME MORE is how much more money are TBC prepared to waste as they mismanage situation after situation.
