A FORMER Meals on Wheels storage depot site is set to be transformed into new homes reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

The former council owned site Corran Way in South Ockendon has been earmarked for nine two-bedroom flats.

The development consists of three individual blocks each linked by an entrance lobby containing a staircase to the upper levels. All three blocks are orientated so that any habitable room windows are facing east, west and south so that none overlook each other.

Developer, Breezy Wind Limited, has submitted a planning application to Thurrock Council.

The application said: “All apartments are spacious. Externally the style of the development is simple and contemporary with a pallet of materials including red brick to the walls with brick band, head and sill details, light grey windows and a metal roof in anthracite.

“The linking lobbies will be predominantly glazed with a flat single ply membrane roof. Externally there are generous landscaped communal garden spaces which are predominantly laid to lawn with areas of shrub and new tree planting.”

If approved there will be four, two-bedroom apartments on the ground floor, four, two-bedroom apartments on the first floor and one, two bedroom apartment on the second floor.

The ground floor apartments will have patios accessed from the lounge and on the first floor two of the apartments have a terrace.

The application includes 18 car parking spaces and a dual electric car charging point is provided for two of the spaces.

Thurrock Council closed its meals on wheels service and two day care centres in 2021 in a bid to save more than £500,000.

A consultation at the time revealed out of the 89 people receiving meals from the delivery scheme run by the WRVS, only 24 had no alternative support in place. Each of the 24 people were assessed and options identified to provide an alternative solution. This saved the council £200.000.
