THE reliability maintenance engineering (RME) team from the Amazon fulfilment centre in Tilbury welcomed their children to the site recently for a day of interactive learning.

The team, who create, reinvent and maintain the cutting-edge technologies that make Amazon’s operations processes smoother, faster and more efficient, organised the day to give their families an insight into what they do at they work.

The children received an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the fulfilment centre that gave them an insight into how Amazon stores, picks and packs products and ships them to customers across the UK.

Other activities included a colouring competition, a mini packing station for the children to pack toys and the opportunity to drive a robot with the AR technicians.

Nicol Linnell is an RME Operator at Amazon in Tilbury and was part of organising the event. She said:

“Our family fun day gave children an opportunity to see where their parent works and get involved in the process for a day. Some of these children will no doubt go on to pursue careers in engineering of some kind, and we hope to have been part of inspiring a love of the job in them. We’re always learning as engineers at Amazon, and I loved passing on some of my knowledge to the keen learners we had with us on the day.”

Omer Kartal, General Manager at Amazon in Tilbury, added:

“Amazon in Tilbury is the largest Amazon fulfilment centre in Europe, which means we have a huge team of engineers with a wealth of knowledge to pass on. I’m very pleased that the family fun day initiative hosted by our RME team went so well, with so many children excited to see and hear about how Amazon operates. Learning outside of the classroom is crucial for children’s development and we’re glad to be part of creating opportunities to make it happen.”

Amazon in Tilbury has 2 million sq. ft. of operating space – equivalent to 28 football pitches – and has been fitted with more than 11,500 module solar panels which generate the equivalent amount of electricity required to power 700 homes for one year.

Amazon has supported more than 700,000 students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.
